Twenty things you can actually do today, for free, that lift sales

"Things you can do for free" without the padding

Every ecommerce blog eventually writes a "55 things you can do for free" list. Most of the 55 are filler. 12 are genuinely useful; the rest are "start a blog!" or "post on Instagram!" advice that sounds actionable but doesn't move any needle.

Below: 20 things that are actually free, actually doable today (an afternoon each, or less), and actually move conversion. Not "improve your brand"; specific actions with specific payoff.

Product page wins (pick 3-4)

1. Rewrite the first line of your top 5 product descriptions

The first line is the only line 60% of visitors read. Most stores' first lines are brand-voice fluff. Rewrite to the headline fact the buyer wants. "Our story began in 2015" becomes "20-litre capacity, fits a 15-inch laptop, waterproof, $89."

Time: 30 minutes total. Impact: measurable within a week.

2. Add an FAQ block to your top 5 product pages

Go to your support inbox. Read the last 30 tickets. Every recurring question on a product is a product-page gap. Add an FAQ block directly below the description answering those questions.

Time: 1 hour. Impact: fewer tickets, higher conversion on the pages that get them.

3. Add alt text to every product image

Alt text is how Google understands what your images show. Also makes your site accessible. Takes two minutes per product. Not optional.

Time: 1-2 hours for a store with 50-100 products. Impact: Google Images traffic + accessibility + SEO signal.

4. Add shipping estimate to your product page

Bury shipping cost until checkout and you'll keep surprising buyers into bouncing. Add "Ships from X, delivery in Y days, from $Z" near the Add to Cart button.

Time: 30 minutes to configure. Impact: fewer cart abandonments.

5. Fix your free shipping threshold

Most stores set this once and forget it. Try lowering it by $10. Watch what happens to AOV. Most stores can lower the threshold and still see net revenue up because more orders qualify.

Time: 5 minutes to change, 2 weeks to measure.

SEO wins (pick 3-4)

6. Submit your sitemap to Google Search Console

If you haven't, Google isn't indexing your site properly. Claim your property, submit /sitemap.xml, verify. Shoprocket generates the sitemap automatically.

Time: 20 minutes. Impact: pages Google didn't know about start ranking.

7. Check Search Console for your top-query pages, rewrite meta descriptions

Every page in Search Console shows which queries sent clicks. For the top 10 pages, rewrite the meta description to answer the exact query (not your brand copy). Click-through rates jump immediately.

Time: 1 hour. Impact: SERP CTR up, no content change needed.

8. Enable the Google Shopping free-listings feed

Whether or not you pay for Shopping ads, the free listings in the Shopping tab drive real traffic. Shoprocket generates the feed; paste the URL into Google Merchant Center. Fix any product rejections.

Time: 45 minutes setup + ongoing feed hygiene. Impact: free traffic for the lifetime of the feed.

9. Cross-post your 10 bestsellers to Pinterest

Pinterest pins rank in Google Image results and drive long-tail traffic. One high-quality vertical image per product + keyword-rich description. Takes 2 minutes per product.

Time: 30 minutes. Impact: slow-building traffic that compounds over months.

10. Claim / verify your Google Business Profile (for local stores)

If you have any physical presence (shop, studio, pickup point), Google Business Profile drives local search. Free to claim; high-ROI for local buyer intent.

Time: 30 minutes. Impact: local-search visibility.

Email and retention wins (pick 3-4)

11. Email your last 500 customers about your current bestseller

Not a "newsletter". A direct, one-paragraph email: "Thought you'd want to know X is back in stock, here's the link." These often outperform acquisition spend for the same reach.

Time: 20 minutes to write, 5 minutes to schedule. Impact: immediate sales, your existing customers are your warmest audience.

12. Set up a welcome email (if you don't have one)

For new subscribers / first-order customers. Single email. "Welcome. Here's what makes our product different. Here's a link to our bestseller." 30 minutes to write, forever running.

Time: 1 hour to set up. Impact: every new signup from now on.

13. Turn on abandoned cart email recovery

If it's not already running: Shoprocket does this by default. One email at 1 hour, another at 24 hours. Typical recovery: 8-12% of abandoned carts.

Time: 10 minutes to enable + customise. Impact: ongoing recovery.

14. Ask 10 existing customers for a review

Handwritten-feeling email, one customer at a time. Not a bulk request. Personal ask on a specific purchase. "Saw you bought X a month ago; curious how it's working out, and a short review helps other buyers a lot." 5-10 of the 10 will respond.

Time: 30 minutes. Impact: instant product-page social proof.

15. Respond to every existing review, good or bad

Signal to future buyers that the brand is alive and listens. Not with templates; with actual thoughtful replies. Even on 1-star reviews, especially on 1-star reviews.

Time: 1-2 hours. Impact: review-page credibility + sometimes turns complainers into repeat buyers.

Technical and hygiene wins (pick 3-4)

16. Install and verify tracking pixels

Meta, TikTok, Google Analytics 4. Shoprocket installs these via dashboard toggle (no code). Then verify they're firing with the Meta Pixel Helper or Google Tag Assistant browser extension.

Time: 30 minutes. Impact: retargeting becomes possible, attribution improves, everything downstream benefits.

17. Compress your top 5 product images

Heavy images are the single biggest mobile-speed killer. Run them through TinyPNG or Squoosh; compressed images are often 60-80% smaller with no visible quality loss.

Time: 20 minutes. Impact: mobile speed up, conversion up.

18. Check mobile load time with PageSpeed Insights

https://pagespeed.web.dev/. Put your top 3 product pages in. Read the "opportunities" list. Fix the top 2-3 issues (usually image optimisation, deferring scripts, lazy loading).

Time: 1-2 hours for the fixes. Impact: compound conversion + SEO gain.

19. Verify Apple Pay and Google Pay are enabled

In Stripe: Settings > Payment methods. Both are free, both lift mobile conversion 5-15%. If they're not on, turn them on.

Time: 5 minutes. Impact: instant mobile conversion lift.

20. Audit your top-3-exit-point pages in analytics

Where are people leaving? Shoprocket's analytics shows exit points by page. If it's the product page, description is the problem. If it's the cart, shipping or complexity is the problem. If it's checkout, payment methods or trust is the problem.

Time: 30 minutes of diagnosis. Impact: points at exactly what to fix next.

Tip: Don't try all 20 in a week. Pick five that feel highest-impact for your store right now, block out an afternoon, ship them. The reason most stores don't do these things isn't capability. It's time. Carve out the time.

What most "free tips" lists miss

The padding items that appear in every "55 tips" list and don't actually work:

  • "Start a newsletter!" (takes months to build an audience; not same-day)
  • "Be active on social!" (vague; not free because time is money)
  • "Focus on branding!" (non-actionable)
  • "Guest post!" (covered in the guest posting post; requires weeks)
  • "Run a giveaway!" (low-intent traffic, attracts bargain-hunters)
  • "Partner with influencers!" (usually isn't free)

These aren't free; they're deferred. The 20 above are free AND finishable in an afternoon.

TL;DR

  • Pick 5 actions. Finish them this week
  • Product page wins: first-line rewrite, FAQ, alt text, shipping estimate, free shipping threshold tweak
  • SEO wins: Search Console sitemap, meta description rewrites, Google Shopping feed, Pinterest cross-post
  • Email wins: one direct email to existing customers, welcome email, abandoned cart, review requests
  • Technical wins: pixels, image compression, mobile speed fix, Apple/Google Pay, exit-point audit
