What "embeddable shopping cart" actually means
Paste a script tag on your existing site, get add-to-cart + checkout without replatforming. That's the category. Five platforms own most of the market, and they're less interchangeable than the category name suggests.
Here's the honest comparison. We make Shoprocket, so bias is disclosed. The goal below is to be direct about when another platform genuinely wins, and when it doesn't.
The five real options in 2026
1. Shoprocket (us)
One script tag on any site, full multi-product catalogue + cart + checkout, zero transaction fees on all plans. Works for single buy buttons too (data-shoprocket="buy-button") and ships a proper JS SDK (shoprocket-js) for custom UIs, event listeners, and programmatic cart control.
The pitch: flat subscription, no per-sale fees, full JS SDK, 21 locales with AI auto-translation, 200+ payment methods, works on any CMS (WordPress, Squarespace, Webflow, Framer, Carrd, Notion, plain HTML).
When it's the right choice: the default for most stores. Subscription math beats percentage fees above ~$1,500/mo in sales, and the embed works the same on any site.
When it's not: you want a merchant of record (see the MoR section below), or you specifically need a third-party app from Ecwid's marketplace that we haven't built natively.
2. Snipcart
HTML-attribute first. Sign up, copy your public API key, add data-item-* attributes to buttons you already have. Snipcart does the rest: cart overlay, checkout, tax, order management. No SDK: the integration surface is the HTML attributes themselves.
The pitch: no subscription, 2% per order, developer-friendly, minimal dashboard.
When it's the right choice: you're doing less than roughly $1,500/month in sales AND you don't want a monthly subscription commitment. At $1,500/mo, Snipcart's 2% fee ($30) hits our Starter plan ($29/mo). Below that, pay-per-sale is cheaper; above it, flat subscription wins fast. At $10k/mo Snipcart is $200/mo in fees vs our $29/mo flat.
When it's not: anything above the break-even volume. Also: you want an SDK, multi-language, or a dashboard your non-technical teammates can use.
3. Ecwid (Lightspeed)
The pioneer of embeddable commerce. Ecwid's been around since 2009. Lightspeed acquired them in 2021 and the product has plateaued since, though feature coverage is still broad.
The pitch: mature, broad feature coverage, and the ecosystem differentiator: a large third-party app marketplace (shipping carriers, accounting integrations, niche CMS connectors, POS integrations).
When it's the right choice: you have a specific third-party integration need that Ecwid's marketplace covers and we don't ship natively. That's the honest case for Ecwid in 2026.
When it's not: anything else. Interface feels dated, free plan was killed in 2024, features are siloed behind tier upgrades.
4. Gumroad / Lemon Squeezy / Payhip (the merchant-of-record group)
Grouped together because they share one feature that none of the cart platforms above offer: merchant of record.
What that means: the platform is the legal seller. They collect, remit, and file sales tax, VAT, and GST in every jurisdiction on your behalf. You don't register for VAT in the EU. You don't file sales tax returns across 45 US states. You get a single payout and a clean 1099.
For digital-goods creators selling internationally, this is genuinely life-changing. Tax compliance across jurisdictions is a real and expensive problem; MoR platforms solve it by being the seller of record themselves.
| Platform | Fees | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Lemon Squeezy | 5% + 50¢ per order | SaaS subscriptions + digital goods, strong MoR |
| Gumroad | 10% + $0.50 per sale (no subscription tier) | Creators, single-product, hosted checkout |
| Payhip | 5% free / 0-2% paid | Digital goods, EU VAT handled |
When they're the right choice: you sell digital products internationally and don't want to touch tax compliance at all. You're happy with a hosted checkout (customer leaves your domain), and the 5-10% all-in rate is worth it to never think about VAT again.
When they're not: you're selling physical goods (MoR doesn't really apply), you want the customer to stay on your site through checkout, or you're at a volume where per-sale fees hurt and you're willing to handle your own tax (which is what every platform above Shoprocket's starter tier also expects you to do).
5. The honest bottom line
On paper, almost every store is better off on Shoprocket. The two legitimate exceptions:
- You need Ecwid's app marketplace for a specific integration we haven't shipped.
- You want a merchant of record and are OK with hosted checkout: Lemon Squeezy or Gumroad.
Snipcart's window (under $1,500/mo, no subscription preference) is narrow enough that most stores grow out of it within months.

How to pick
- You want a merchant of record (zero tax admin for international digital goods) → Lemon Squeezy for SaaS/subscriptions, Gumroad for simpler single-product creators.
- You need a specific Ecwid marketplace app we don't ship → Ecwid.
- You're under ~$1,500/mo in sales and don't want a monthly subscription → Snipcart.
- Anything else → Shoprocket. Zero transaction fees, works on any site, full SDK, real cart behaviour, customer stays on your domain.
Rough fee math at real volumes
Plus gateway fees (Stripe/PayPal) on every row. These numbers cover what the platform takes on top.
| Platform | At $10k/mo | At $50k/mo | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shoprocket Starter ($29/mo + 0%) | $29/mo | $29/mo | Flat regardless of volume |
| Snipcart (2%, no sub) | $200/mo | $1,000/mo | Pure percentage |
| Ecwid Business (~$39/mo, 0% tier) | $39/mo | $39/mo | Flat once on paid tier |
| Payhip Plus ($29/mo + 2%) | $229/mo | $1,029/mo | Tier 2 of 3 |
| Payhip Pro ($99/mo + 0%) | $99/mo | $99/mo | Tier 3 of 3 (zero txn fees) |
| Gumroad (10% + $0.50, no sub) | ~$1,000/mo + 50¢/order | ~$5,000/mo + 50¢/order | MoR, no subscription tier |
| Lemon Squeezy (5% + $0.50) | ~$500/mo + 50¢/order | ~$2,500/mo + 50¢/order | MoR: tax admin handled for you |
Lemon Squeezy's $2,500/mo at $50k is worth it if you'd otherwise spend that on tax compliance across jurisdictions. If not, the flat-subscription platforms above are dramatically cheaper.
Tip: Under $1,500/mo in sales, transaction-fee platforms are cheaper on paper. Above that threshold, flat subscriptions pull ahead fast. Above any volume, MoR platforms win only if tax compliance is the actual problem they're solving for you.
TL;DR
- Need merchant of record (zero tax admin) → Lemon Squeezy / Gumroad / Payhip
- Need Ecwid's specific app marketplace → Ecwid
- Under $1,500/mo in sales, no subscription preference → Snipcart
- Everything else → Shoprocket. Zero transaction fees, any site, real cart, full SDK.
