If you're on a legacy or niche cart platform, this is for you
This post is the catch-all for stores on platforms that are either dead, dying, or genuinely niche. Over the years people have searched for alternatives to Selz (shut down in 2021), OSCommerce, Zen Cart, OpenCart, PrestaShop, Sellix, Selly, Selar, Shopwired, Shift4Shop, Romancart, Foxy Cart, Checkoutpage, and a long tail of similar tools.
The honest answer for most of these is the same. Here's what actually works in 2026.
The three categories these platforms fall into
1. Dead or effectively dead
Selz shut down in 2021. Sellix has pivoted hard toward digital goods with anti-piracy focus but lost broad ecommerce momentum. Foxy Cart still runs but hasn't meaningfully evolved in years. Romancart is tiny and French-only.
If your platform is in this bucket, the migration question isn't whether to move, it's where.
2. Self-hosted legacy (OSCommerce, Zen Cart, OpenCart, PrestaShop)
These are open-source carts from the 2000s that still power a surprising number of stores. They work. They're free. But you're paying for them in other ways:
- Server maintenance and updates eat several hours a month, or you pay someone to do it
- Security patches are your problem; getting hacked costs orders of magnitude more than any hosted platform's subscription
- Hosting costs add up; once you need any real traffic, VPS + CDN + backups beats the subscription anyway
- Plugin rot: most of the plugin ecosystems for these platforms have stagnated; modern payment methods, tax integrations, and shipping APIs are spotty
- Performance on page load and checkout is genuinely poor vs. modern platforms
The appeal is "free". The reality is unpaid labour.
3. Hosted niche (Shopwired, Shift4Shop, Selly, Selar, Sellix, Checkoutpage)
Real products, smaller ecosystems. The feature coverage is narrower than Shopify or a modern cart-widget like ours. Common pain points:
- Limited payment method coverage (often missing Apple Pay / Google Pay / local methods)
- Shallow integrations (shipping, accounting, tax, marketplaces)
- Dated interfaces
- Smaller support teams and slower feature velocity
- In some cases, regional restrictions
Some of these have legitimate niches (Selar for Africa-focused digital goods, for example). If yours does, stay there. If not, you're probably holding onto a platform out of inertia.
What the modern alternative looks like
Two realistic paths out of a legacy or niche cart platform:
Path 1: Full hosted replatform (Shopify, BigCommerce)
Move everything onto a modern all-in-one platform. Rebuild the site on their theme system, migrate products and customers, re-integrate your other tools. It works; it's also a multi-week project with real cost.
Path 2: Keep your site, embed commerce
Your existing content / marketing site stays. You paste a script tag into it. The script renders a full storefront: catalogue with search, filters, pagination, variants, a slide-out cart, checkout, payments. Done.
<!-- EXAMPLE ONLY. Grab your real snippet from Sales channels → Embeds in your dashboard -->
<script src="https://cdn.shoprocket.io/loader.js" data-pk="pk_yourkey"></script>
<div data-shoprocket="catalog" data-embed-id="emb_xxx"></div>
This is Shoprocket's default path. You don't rebuild anything. You don't migrate themes. The widget works inside any CMS (WordPress, Webflow, Squarespace, Carrd, Framer, Notion, static HTML). 200+ payment methods, 21 locales with AI auto-translation, zero platform transaction fees on any plan.
For the stuck-on-legacy-self-hosted case (OSCommerce, Zen Cart), this is almost always the right move. You keep your marketing site, you shed the server-maintenance burden, your checkout UX jumps a decade forward overnight.
For the hosted-niche case (Selly, Shopwired, etc.), it's a judgment call. If you're happy with the platform's niche, stay. If you're running into walls, the embed model gets you out cheaply.
Migration reality check
Before anyone oversells this, the honest version:
- Exporting data from your old platform is usually painful; expect CSV tweaks
- URL mapping needs thought if you have existing SEO juice on product pages
- Order history stays on the old platform; Shoprocket starts fresh from launch
- Subscriptions (if you had them) need recreating from scratch; they don't migrate cleanly between platforms
- Expect a parallel-run period where the old platform handles legacy orders while the new embed handles new ones
For most stores this takes a weekend. For larger catalogues, a week. Anyone promising instant zero-effort migration is selling you something.
When to pick Shoprocket, and when not to
Pick us when:
- You've got an existing site you like and don't want to rebuild it
- Flat-subscription pricing with zero transaction fees beats your current economics
- You want modern embed + full JS SDK available for custom work (shoprocket-js)
- You need real cart behaviour on any CMS
Pick something else when:
- You want a merchant of record handling all international tax for you: Lemon Squeezy, Gumroad, or Payhip
- You need POS + physical retail tight integration: Shopify POS or Lightspeed
- You need Ecwid's specific third-party app marketplace: Ecwid
- You're evaluating full all-in-one platforms and want theme ecosystems: Shopify or BigCommerce
What the new setup looks like end-to-end
- Sign up, 14-day free trial, no card
- Import products via CSV (or add manually)
- Configure payment methods, shipping, tax rules
- Paste the embed script on your existing site
- Publish
Five steps, usually under an hour for a small catalogue. Pricing from $29 onward, zero transaction fees on every plan.
Tip: If you're on a platform that actually shut down (Selz, for example), don't just replicate the exact setup on us. The platform going away is also a chance to simplify your catalogue, drop SKUs that weren't selling, and redo your checkout UX. Most sellers come out of forced migrations better-positioned than they went in.
TL;DR
- Dead platform (Selz, etc.): move. Shoprocket or any reputable alternative.
- Self-hosted legacy (OSCommerce, Zen Cart, OpenCart, PrestaShop): you're paying in maintenance hours. The embed-on-your-existing-site model replaces that with a subscription and zero-fee payments.
- Niche hosted (Shopwired, Selly, Selar, Sellix, Shift4Shop, etc.): if the niche genuinely fits, stay. Otherwise, the migration pays for itself in features.
- Our positioning: flat subscription, 0% transaction fees, works on any existing site, widget + full JS SDK for devs who want more control.
